Pronoun, Kata Ganti

Pronoun adalah istilah dalam bahasa inggris yang menjadi salah satu bagian dari parts of speech.

Pronouns

Istilah pronoun itu sendiri memiliki arti yaitu

Words which take the place of nouns. We use pronouns to avoid repetition.

Kata kata yang menggantikan kata benda. Kita menggunakan pronouns untuk menghindari adanya pengulangan penulisan kata benda pada sebuah kalimat baik tertulis maupun lisan.

Di dalam bahasa Inggris ada beberapa istilah atau jenis-jenis pronouns:

Personal Pronouns

Penggunaan personal pronoun menunjukan pada orang, tempat atau benda-benda tanpa menamakannya.

Personal pronoun bisa digunakan sebagai subjek pada sebuah kalimat. Dalam bahasa Inggris, personal pronoun adalah sebagai berikut.

She, He, It, They, We, I, You. 

Contoh dalam kalimat:

 a. She is cute.

 b. He is diligent 

 c. It is a mask.

 d. They are busy.

 e. We go to the mountain.

 f. I help you soon.

 g. You are my best friend.

Selain sebagai subjek, personal pronoun dapat digunakan sebagai objek pada sebuah kalimat. 

Her, him, it, them, us, me, you.

Contoh dalam kalimat:

 a. I love her.

 b. My brother is dilligent. I study with him.

Possessive Pronouns dan Possessive Adjective

Kita menggunakan possessive pronouns dan possessive adjective untuk menunjukan sebuah kepemilikan. Agar lebih jelas perhatikan table berikut:

They	Their	Theirs
We	Our	Ours
I	My	Mine
You	Your	Yours

Contoh kalimat, perhatikan perubahan kalimatnya pada table berikut:

She	This is her jacket.	The jacket is hers.
He	This is his jacket.	The jacket is his.
They	These are their jacket.	These jackets are theirs.
We	These are our jacket.	These jackets are ours.
I	This is my jacket.	This jacket is mine.
You	This is your jacket.	This jacket is yours.

Reflexive pronoun

Reflexive pronoun adalah kata ganti yang kembali pada diri sendiri. LIhat table berikut:

Personal pronoun	Reflexive pronouns
She	Herself
He	Himself
They	Themselves
We	Ourselves
I	Myself
You	Yourselves
It	Itself

Demonstrative pronoun

Ada beberapa demonstrative pronoun, yaitu this, that, these dan those. Keempat demonstrative pronoun ini digunakan untuk menunjukan pada orang, tempat atau benda-benda. 

Contoh:

 a. This cat is mine.

 b. The bird is flying. 

 c. These birds are flying.

 d.  Those students are my friend.

This (artinya ini, bendanya cuma satu) contoh kalimat (a).

The (artinya menuju pada benda yang sudah jelas) contohnya kalimat (b).

These (artinya ini, menunjukan bendaya lebih dari satu).

Those (artinya itu, menunjukan bendanya lebih dari satu/banyak).

Interrogative pronouns

Interrogative pronouns adalah kata ganti yang digunakan untuk menanyakan sebuah pertanyaan. Di dalam bahasa Inggris, Interrogative pronouns adalah:

What, Where, Why, Who, Which, When, Whose, How. 

Perhatikan table berikut:

What	Menanyakan untuk sesuatu yang umum	What day is today?
Why	Menanyakan alas an	Why do you come late?
Which	Menanyakan pilihan	Which pen do you choose?
Who	Menanyakan tentang seseorang secara umum	Who is in the garden
When	Menanyakan waktu, bulan, tahun	When do you go to school?
Whose	Menanyakan (siapa) pemilik	Whose car is it?
Where	Menanyakan lokasi	Where do you go?
How	Menanyakan cara	How do make a cup of coffee?

Reciprocal pronouns

Reciprocal pronouns dibagi menjadi dua yaitu, each other dan one another. 

Kita menggunakan each other untuk menunjukan pada dua orang, tempat, atau benda-benda yang lain. Sedangkan one another digunakan untuk menunjukan lebih dari dua jenis, bisa group atau kelompok orang atau benda.

Contoh:

 a) The two banks are located in the same town. It helps to each other.

 b) All the towns in the district were, competing with one another for the "cleanest estate' prize.
