Adverbs in English

The function of adverbs

Adverb is used to modify adjectives, verbs and other adverbs. Some of adverbs end in -ly, but not all adverbs do so.

Types of adverbs.

There are five main types of Adverbs in English, such as:

Adverb of Manner

Adverb of manner answers the queries: How does it work?" for example:

Beautifully : The singer sings beautifully.

Bravely : My daughter bravely speaks to stranger.

Neatly : My mother arranges the books in my reading room neatly.

Quickly : Bertha runs very quickly.

Patiently     : Ricky is patiently waiting for his daddy.

Adverbs of Degree

Adverbs of degree shows us about the intensity of an action.

Adverbs of degree answer the question "How much?". Moreover, they can also describe the degree of an adjective or another verb.

Examples of adverbs of degree:

Almost

enough

hardly

quite

just

really

simply

so

too

very

Sentence example:

My mother is wearing a dress. It looks simply gorgeous.

I am so tired. I have done a hundred math questions.

The beach was beautiful enough.

He is very talented boy.

Adverb of Frequency

Adverb of frequency respond the question "How often?". The adverbs is written before the main verb in the sentence of at the end of the clause.

Example of adverbs of frequency:

Always

Never

Eevery (week, day, month)

Normally

Rarely

Seldom

Sometimes

Usually

Almost always

Hardly ever

often

Sentence examples:

John never gets up late every morning.

Ahmad often plays football on Sunday.

Jaka lifts weights every day.

Adverb of Place

Adverb of place talks about where the event of action took place. While some of adverbs of place can be functioned as preposition when those are used to modify nouns. And it considered as adverbs when it modifies verbs.

Everywhere

Somewhere

in (in the yard, in the kitchen)

outside

out

above

there

Sentence Examples:

Many students stand in the yard. They are about conducting ceremony.

Afnan is going to the second floor. He is sitting in the balcony.

You can park your car anywhere.

Adverb of Time

Adverbs of time tell the detail of when an event or action took place. However, many preposition can also indicate when something happen, they are also followed by objects, so we can easily tell when a word is adverb of time.

Example of Adverb of time:

now, then, today, tomorrow, tonight, yesterday, annually, daily, hourly, monthly, often, seldom, regularly, before, after, next, later, last.

Sentence Example:

Afnan will come to my home tomorrow.

Jenny is going to visit her mom next month.

Today is Sunday.
