Pada tulisan ini kita akan pelajari bersama tentang Noun Phrase. 

Apa itu Noun Phrase?

Noun phrase jika diartikan ke dalam Bahasa Indonesia maka artinya adalah Frasa Kata benda. Noun (Kata benda), Phrase (frasa).

Noun phrase

A group of two or more words headed by a noun and including modifiers is called a noun phrase.

Noun Phrase adalah sekelompok dua kata atau lebih yang dipimpin oleh sebuah kata benda dan mencakup modifikator.

Noun phrase juga bisa termasuk; determiners, quantifiers, numbers dan adjective.

Sebelum memahami lebih jauh tentang Noun Phrase, mari kita pahami istilah premodifiers dan postmodifiers. Karena kedua istilah ini digunakan untuk membentuk noun phrase.

Pengertian premodifiers dan postmodifiers?

Premodifiers adalah sebuah kata atau frasa yang digunakan sebelum kata lainnya yang fungsinya untuk memaknai kata setelahnya.

Susunan premodifiers: 

Determiners dan quantifiers + numbers + adjective + noun. 

Lihat table berikut sebagai contoh.

The	five		students
Our		lovely	children
Many		young	persons
The	two	smart	students

Contoh premodifier:

Fat cat

The big boss

Blond hair

Kata Fat adalah premodifier yang datang sebelum kata cat. Kata fat berfungsi untuk memaknai kata Cat. Kucing yang gemuk.

Kata The adalah determiner, berfungsi sebagai premodifier yang datang sebelum frasa big bos. 

Kata Blond adalah adjective (kata sifat) sebagai premodifier yang datang sebelum kata hair.

Sedangkan postmodifiers adalah kata atau frasa yang datang setelah kata benda yang menjelaskan atau memaknai kata benda tersebut.

Post modifiers bisa berupa; prepositional phrase, ing phrase/present participle phrase, past participle phrase, relative clause, to infinitives.

Lihat contoh pada table berikut ini: Yang bercetak tebal merupakan noun phrase.

Prepositional Phrase	Present Participial Phrase	Past Participial Phrase	Relative Clause	To infinitive

Contoh lain postmodifier:

a student with a black t-shirt, 

the boy in the classroom

a lady standing over there

the man we talked yesterday

Frasa seperti with a black t-shirt merupakan postmodifier. Karena frasa itu datang setelah kata benda a student.

Begitu juga frasa in the classroom menjelaskan kata the boy, standing over there menjelaskan kata a lady, dan we talked yesterday menjelaskan kata the man.  

Pembentukan noun phrase

Pembentukan noun phrase ada 3 struktur yang berbeda.

1. Premodifier/s + noun

Contohnya: The blue sky, a luxury car, the bad weather.

2. Noun + postmodifier/s

Contohnya: The man with a blue shirt, the boy in the classroom.

3. Premodifier/s + Noun + Postmodifiers

Contohnya: The tall man with a blue shirt, a beautiful girl sitting on the desk.
